Policy students learn how to talk to legislators

On Feb. 8, students from two advanced policy courses taught by Marie Weil and Lisa de Saxe Zerden attended an orientation about the upcoming Advocacy Day, March 30, an annual event sponsored by the N.C. Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW-NC).

Advocacy Day allows social workers from across the state to come together to learn more about the legislative process and to become better advocates for the profession. Participants can speak directly to lawmakers or their representatives about issues and legislation that concern the social work profession.

Pictured at the front of the room is Kay Paksoy, director of advocacy, policy and legislation for NASW-NC. Paksoy discussed legislative bills that have already been introduced this session, including ones targeting health care and undocumented immigrants. She also offered tips on effective advocacy and advice on how to approach state lawmakers.
