In memoriam: King ’55, Luce ’79

Louise Webb King, MSW ’55, died Dec. 18, 2010, in Charlottesville, Va. In 1955, she began her second career as a psychiatric social worker at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem. Later, King accepted a position with the Roanoke Guidance Center, Roanoke. There she was one of the first professionals at the Center which has evolved into Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare with more than 400 employees serving the mental health needs of the Roanoke Valley. She retired in the 1980’s. When she resided in the Roanoke Valley, she was president of the Mental Health Association; and a member of the American Association of University Women and National Association of Social Workers.

Scott Luce, MSW ’79, of Winterville, N.C., died Dec. 19, 2010, after battling dementia for many years. Luce started his career in social work in Snow Hill, where he developed a specialty practice in geriatrics. After seven years in Snow Hill, he moved to Pitt County Mental Health, where he became the geriatric specialist. In addition, he was a skilled marriage and family therapist and teacher in the SAFE (Spouse Abuse and Family Education) program. He also was a member of the emergency response group at the mental health center. He retired from Pitt County Mental Health in 2002 after 25 years of service. He was active in the community, helping to found the first homeless shelter in Greenville and served on its board for a number of years. Luce was the president of the North Carolina Epilepsy Association for several years. He served on the Council of Aging, The Real Crisis Center and helped the Creative Living Center find funding.
