Wegmann and Bowen to conduct online training for teachers

In November, doctoral student Kate Wegmann, MSW ’10 and Associate Professor Natasha Bowen, Ph.D. will be conducting an online professional development course for 30 teachers through Learn NC. Wegmann is the official instructor of the course.

The course is designed to provide teachers with concrete strategies for creating an optimal psychological context for learning in the classroom. The strategies are expected to be especially beneficial for groups facing negative ability stereotypes. Content is based on a strong base of empirical and theoretical work, including the Elementary School Success Profile (ESSP) team’s own work in elementary schools in North Carolina.

As subjects in a pilot test of the effectiveness of using online learning to change teacher classroom behaviors, participants will be observed in their classrooms before and after taking the course.
