Romanians look to UNC for school success strategies

Gary Bowen and Dennis Orthner presented at the School Success conference in Cluj, Romania, May 13-16. Bowen presented his work on the School Success Profile, including the U.S. and Romanian results. Orthner presented on his CareerStart intervention in North Carolina middle schools.

The pictures are from a trip sponsored by the Romanian university to rural areas a couple of hours north of Cluj, depopulated during the communist period with forced relocation of people to industrialize the cities. The people in these pictures came from the U.S., Canada, Portugal, Israel and Romania.

Bowen was a guest editor for the June 2010 issue of a Romanian sociology journal, Studia Sociolgiae, a special issue focusing on school success.

It includes an article by Bowen and Dean Jack Richman entitled, “The School Success Profile: Assessing the Social Environment and the Individual Adaptation of Middle and High School Students.” Orthner also authored an article, with Roderick Rose and doctoral student Micaela Mercado, “CareerStart: A Middle Grades Strategy for Promoting Student School Engagement and Academic Success.”

“This was a great meeting and a wonderful chance to share our education innovations to a European audience,” said Orthner.
