Student Spotlight: Casey Buisson (he/him)
Program: 12-Month Advanced Standing.
Current job title: Intern at LGBTQ Center of Durham.
How will your MSW degree help you achieve your goals?: The real-world skills I’m learning here are unparalleled. I’m taking classes like community organizing or fundraising for nonprofits and then I’m going to my practicum placement and using those skills every day. By the time I graduate, I know I’ll be ready for whatever the world throws my way.
Why did you choose UNC School of Social Work?: Frankly, UNC is the best school of social work in the South. That may as well mean best in the country because this was as far north as I was willing to go. I knew UNC would push me outside of my comfort zone and although I love my alma mater dearly (Roll Tide, The University of Alabama School of Social Work), I felt I needed a challenge. I’m a macro social worker through and through, and the community, management, and policy practice track is exactly what I was looking for. Lastly, I knew that a research assistantship would be an amazing opportunity both personally and professionally. I won’t say it was an easy decision, but it was the right one.
Favorite study spot: My bed (not the most productive, but definitely my favorite).
Coffee or tea?: As a true Southerner, sweet tea only.
