Student Spotlight: Morgan Church, (she/her)

Program: 2-Year MSW Program

Current job title: Behavioral health consultant in the primary care clinic at UNC Campus Health.

Why did you choose UNC School of Social Work?: I chose to pursue my MSW at UNC School of Social Work because my time as an undergraduate at UNC fostered a deep connection with the Chapel Hill community and Triangle at large. The abundant opportunities here, along with the supportive environment, made it an ideal place to continue my education. Programs like PrimeCare4Youth and the Substance Use and Addiction Specialist (SUAS), which I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of, were especially attractive and offer supplemental education that align perfectly with my career goals and personal values. Just looking at the course list gave me that spark of intellectual excitement! Plus, being a part of a consistently nationally ranked program means I know I’m receiving one of the best educations, surrounded by highly qualified, empathetic professors and motivated, engaging classmates. It’s a place where I can thrive academically and professionally, knowing I’m learning from and with the best.

How is social work important to your community?: Social work plays a crucial role in communities like the one I grew up in, rural Appalachia, where access to resources and services can be limited. In areas facing economic hardship, substance use, and mental health challenges, social workers help bridge gaps by connecting individuals to essential care and advocating for equity in under-resourced populations. Growing up there, I saw first-hand how isolation, stigma, and a lack of access can deeply impact individuals and families. Social work provides the tools to bring support and hope to communities like mine, ensuring that people have the opportunity to thrive regardless of their circumstances.

Favorite Hobbies: All things outdoors— hiking, kayaking, tennis, biking.

Fun Fact: I’m a first-generation student in my family for both undergraduate and graduate education!
