Behind the scenes with #GiveUNC

Tuesday, March 30, 2021, is our annual #GiveUNC campaign — a full day to focus on raising funds for a single cause. It’s important that you understood fully what we are asking and what your gift will mean to UNC School of Social Work.

Last week, Dean Gary Bowen and Associate Dean for Doctoral Education Mimi Chapman shared the email excerpted below with our faculty and staff. We wanted to share this with you, too:

We hope this email finds you well and hopefully seeing some ray of light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel. We understand how challenging the last year has been. Thank you for persevering and continuing the much-needed work of the School of Social Work.

The School of Social Work participates each year in the annual GiveUNC campaign. Thank you for the generous support you have provided during these campaigns. We know you will share our excitement about the focus of this year’s campaign.

All donations received during GiveUNC will be designated to help the School close the gap and fully fund the Maeda and David Galinsky Scholarship Fund, which supports our doctoral students. We are about $87,000 away from raising the full endowment amount ($550K) that will provide a full stipend for one student. This is BIG!

This will be the first fully endowed scholarship in support of our Ph.D. program. It will also create momentum for other fundraising efforts in support of the program. The Galinsky family and our School’s Board of Advisors have generously supported our fundraising efforts. [Progress toward the $87,000 goal] now exceeds over $60,000. Mimi and I are so proud of the campaign efforts to this point, and we have made our respective gifts.

As many of you know, the doctoral program was particularly important to Maeda. She was in the original group of instructors in the doctoral program, teaching intervention research. She was instrumental in encouraging students to do their best work, and she was extremely sensitive and responsive to their personal circumstances.

… We are asking for your help to ensure that Dr. Galinsky’s legacy of support for doctoral education and doctoral students continues in perpetuity. Please donate in the spirit of the tremendous gift that Dr. Galinsky was to each of us, a gift which will fortunately carry forward in our minds and hearts and through the work of our Ph.D. graduates.

Our goal for March 30, 2021, is to close the gap on this endowment, providing a full stipend for a doctoral student to complete Ph.D. studies here. We are only a few thousand dollars away from meeting this goal, and your gift of any amount will move us closer to our goal.

If you can help, please visit our secure online donation site and, using the pulldown menu under Gift Information, choose the “David and Maeda Galinsky Scholarship Fund” to designate your gift for this goal.

Thank you for your support of our doctoral students and our School, in memory of Maeda.
