Karen Smith Rotabi, Ph.D. ’05, has a new book co-authored with Nicole Bromfield titled, “From Intercountry Adoption to Global Surrogacy: A Human Rights History and New Fertility Frontiers.” The book, published by Routledge Press, examines the ethical complexities of intercountry adoption and the relatively new problems of commercial global surrogacy. The book includes research conducted in Gujarat, India, where surrogate mothers were interviewed about their experiences to include their perceptions of exploitation. Also found in the book is Rotabi’s clear expertise in intercountry adoption from Guatemala, where she has previously worked in child health promotion. This particular book builds upon Rotabi’s earlier co-edited book, Intercountry Adoption: Policies, Practices and Outcomes (Ashgate Press, 2012). As a result of her work, Rotabi was appointed to serve on an expert working group on child rights for International Social Service, Geneva, Switzerland. Currently, Rotabi is an associate professor of social work and MSW program coordinator at the United Arab Emirates University. Learn more about Rotabi’s work.
