School celebrates 95th annual commencement

The UNC School of Social Work held its 95th annual hooding ceremony on Sat., May 7. Over 1,200 people packed Memorial Hall to celebrate the 140 MSW and four Ph.D. graduates.
Dean Jack Richman and Alumni Council President Ebon Freeman-James, MSW ’02, welcomed the audience, and presented the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Awards. This year’s honorees are Gary Bowen, Ph.D., MSW ’76; Desdemona Faison, MSW ’85; Justin Perry, MSW ’09; and Stephen Douglas Trantham, MSW ’92.
In a special presentation by SoWoSO chairs Brye Balkum, Meghan Bond and Theresa Collosso, the MSW Class of 2016 recognized Iris Carlton-LaNey, Ph.D., with the Most Outstanding Professor Award; Paul Lanier, Ph.D., Most Innovative Professor Award; Lisa de Saxe Zerzen, Ph.D., Most Inspiring Professor Award; Laurie Selz-Campbell, Most Supportive Professor Award; Annie Francis, MSW ’11, Dedication to Enriching the Student Experience Award; and Beth Sauer, Most Supportive Staff Member Award.
Clinical Assistant Professor Laurie Selz Campbell gave the commencement address.
