Kathleen Rounds and doctoral student Christina Horsford attended a Sept. 25 White House briefing for social workers entitled, “Addressing the Social Determinants of Health in a New Era: The Role of Social Work Education.” Several senior White House officials participated in four panels addressing the importance of social workers as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act moves into a new phase October 1, when the health insurance exchanges are open for business. Led by Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) President Dr. Darla Spence Coffey, about 160 social workers were welcomed into the historic Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building for this briefing.
Bebe Smith spoke on “Critical time intervention in N.C.” at Durham VA Medical Center’s Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center’s fall conference. The event was held at Duke University on Oct. 8 in celebration of Mental Illness Awareness Week.

Lisa Zerden, Josh Hinson and alumna Arianna Taboada (MSW/MPH ’12) co-authored an article in the journal Advances in Social Work, Vol 14, No 1 (2013); Special Issue: The Impact of Socio-Economic, Cultural, Political, and International Factors on Latinos/Latinas in the U.S.; entitled, “Carolina del Norte and the New South: Social work practice with new Latino immigrant communities.”
