Alums name their firstborn after the School

Anna McCullough and Tim Schwantes, both MSW ’07, welcomed their first child, son Sam Turner Schwantes, on May 25, 2013.

“Because Anna and I met in the SSW, we felt like it was only fitting that a part of his name would be connected to the School, and John Turner had such a large impact on getting the School where it is now, we picked it for his middle name,” said Tim.

John Turner Ph.D., was a former dean. His career in social work spanned more than 40 years and his efforts and leadership helped earn national recognition for the School. The Tate-Turner-Kuralt building is named after him.

Tim, who also earned an MPH at Carolina in 2009, is the project manager for Active Living By Design, a project of the North Carolina Institute for Public Health, at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Anna earned an MSPH at Carolina in 2008. She is a program manager for the

Nicotine Dependence Program at the N.C. Cancer Hospital, which is part of the UNC Nicotine Dependence Program based in the Department of Family Medicine. They were married on Sept. 26, 2009, in Chapel Hill.
