Artists with mental illness share how art helps them heal

On April 9, 2012, the UNC School of Social Work hosted  “Brushes with Life: Art, Artists and Mental Illness,” a presentation, film screening and conversation with artists. The award-winning documentary “Brushes with Life” by artist and videographer Philip Brubaker was shown, followed by a discussion with artists and others who have supported the project. Works by local artists were on display in the School’s lobby. The event was organized by UNC School of Social Work Clinical Associate Professor Laurie Selz-Campbell and alumna Bebe Smith, MSW ’93, co-director of the UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health and a clinical assistant professor with the UNC Department of Psychiatry.

The event was sponsored by the UNC School of Social Work, Social Work Student Organization (SOWOSO), and the UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health.
