MSW student Alex Collins has been awarded a FLAS graduate fellowship through UNC’s African Studies Center to study Arabic over the summer in Morocco.
FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) is a Department of Education program that offers fellowships to meritorious graduate and undergraduate students in all disciplines and professional schools. The fellowship supports language study in less commonly taught languages and related area studies.
Collins will be taking eight weeks of intensive intermediate Arabic and a graduate-level class in Contemporary Issues in North Africa at Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco.
She will also be working with School of Social Work professor Dr. Gina Chowa to conduct some exploratory field research while there, on rural women’s access to prenatal care and domestic violence services.
