Legislator visits the School

State Senator Ellie Kinnaird visited the School of Social Work on Jan. 3.

She was invited by Anna Scheyett, associate dean for academic affairs, for an informational visit to find out more about the School, who we are and what we do.
“Our School is a resource for information for North Carolina and the legislature, and we provide a tremendous service to the state,” said Scheyett.

Kinnaird met with Dean Jack Richman and Scheyett; and faculty members Matthew Howard, Gary Nelson, Joelle Powers, Gary Cuddeback and Lane Cooke. She learned about several innovative research projects in areas such as criminal justice, elementary education, mental health, substance abuse and aging.

Kinnaird, a UNC alumna, is in her seventh term representing Orange and Person Counties. She serves on several senate committees and special assignments, and is co-chair of the State Senate Mental Health/Youth Services and the Senate Appropriations on Justice and Public Safety committees.

“This marks an initial effort to help inform legislators about the research knowledge and engaged scholarship that is ongoing at the School which can be a great source of information for policy makers as they seek to solve current problems with limited resources,” said Richman.
