How do I give to the 2008 State Employees Combined Campaign?

It's Easy!

Please complete a Pledge Form to designate the charities you have decided to support. The 2008 Resource Guide lists this year's participating charities.

Permanent full-time and part-time employees have several options for making their pledge. The most convenient option is to give by payroll deduction—it's easy and efficient. The minimum for payroll is deduction is $5.00 per month, which is about 20 cents per workday. Payroll deductions will begin in January 2009 and continue through December 2009.

If you prefer, you can also give by cash, check, or credit card. The SECC offers a secure site for credit card transactions through PayPal. If you are a temporary or contract employee, your gift is welcomed and appreciated, but the payroll deduction option isn't available—you can make a donation by cash, check, or credit card.

Can I designate which charity my donation supports?

Yes! The 2008 Resource Guidelists all participating charities and their assigned code numbers, provides brief descriptions, and lists their Web site addresses. The SECC has screened all the participating charities using criteria of fiscal integrity and sound management practices, but you can visit the charity Web sites for more information about their programs and services.

Do you already support charities? You may be pleasantly surprised to find them in the Resource Guide. Remember that giving through SECC means that more of your money goes to the programs and people you are trying to help, because the overhead is less.

Not sure which one to support? You can make an undesignated gift to the SECC as a whole. Undesignated gifts are pooled and then distributed among all the charities.

Once you have decided which charities you want to support, record the charity's code number on your Pledge Form. When designating a charity, a minimum gift of $5 is requested to cover administrative costs.

How much should I give?

Your gift is an individual and personal decision, but a commonly accepted formula is at least one hour's pay per month for 12 months. This results in a generous annual gift payable in relatively small payroll deductions. I can't give much. Will my gift be eaten up by administrative costs? A modest gift can make a big impact! Are there levels of giving?A "Leadership Gift" is a gift of $150 or more. The categories of Leadership giving are:

  • Dogwood: $150-$399
  • Cardinal: $400-$649
  • Emerald: $650-$999
  • Diamond: $1,000-$2,499
  • Chairman's Society: $2,500 and up

Can I give a gift in honor of someone?

Yes! The Pledge Form has a special section to complete for gifts given in honor of someone special in your life. The SECC will send let the honoree know of your pledge.

What about my taxes? Will I get a receipt for my donation?

You will receive a letter from the State Campaign Office (by January 31) for a one-time gift of $250 or more made by cash, check, or credit card. For the one-time gifts less than $250, a copy of the completed pledge form or a canceled check is sufficient as a receipt.

If you make a contribution through payroll deduction, a receipt is not necessary unless $250 or more is deducted from a single paycheck. For payroll deductions exceeding $250 from a single check, you must keep (1) a pay stub, Form W-2 or other document furnished by your employer that proves the annual amount withheld, and (2) a pledge form or other document from the qualified organization that states the organization does not provide goods and services in return Contributors with additional questions should refer to IRS Publication 256.
