| What Coach Roy Williams and Dean Jack Richman Said

Coach Williams says, "The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a great tradition in academics and we've been pretty good in athletics as well, but one of the things that I think we all should be proud of is that we also have a great gift of giving. The State Employees Combined Campaign is one great thing that we can do for other people who may not be as fortunate as we are. It's something we are extremely proud of here at the university. Over the years this campaign has raised millions of dollars for state, local, and even national causes. In fact, since 2000, the employees have raised over $5.5 million and we've all felt very, very good about that. But your help is still needed. This year, I ask that you join our chair, Jack Richman, Dean of the School of Social Work; our Chancellor Thorp, and me in trying to help this 2008 Carolina Cares, Carolina Shares campaign be fantastic. You can give something, we would like that. It doesn't have to be great, but if you'll be involved, this will be something that you'll feel very good about, and we'll have a fantastic campaign and help a lot of people that perhaps are not as fortunate as we are."

Dean Richman (Chair of the 2008 State Employees Combined Campaign)
[The video begins with a shot of Dean Richman sitting in front of a white wall with several pictures on it.]
Dean Richman says: "The University of North Carolina has a long tradition of working for positive change to improve the lives of all North Carolinians. When working in our community or responding to global needs, Carolina consistently shows the generous spirit and willingness to share what we have.
"This year's theme of the State Employees Combined Campaign perfectly captures the Carolina spirit of caring: Carolina Cares, Carolina Shares. As the Dean of the School of Social Work, I am especially pleased to chair this year's SECC campaign because I know firsthand how critical nonprofit organizations are to the quality of life in North Carolina. For nearly a century the School of Social Work has served the people of North Carolina by collaborating on programs, training, researchall aimed at improving the overall health and wellbeing of the people in our state.
"The SECC provides us with an opportunity to reach out and touch the lives of those in need. Giving to the SECC is a way for each of usit's a way for youto take an active role in sustaining over 900 local, state, national, and international organizations, all working to improve our quality of life and to make a meaningful contribution to our community.
"The combined campaign is a remarkable and effective event that helps every dollar of your contribution go further. Each charity is screened for a sound management and for keeping administrative costs low, so the funds that are distributed to charities go towards their programs that actually impact people.
"You know, on any given news day, in the media, we see our economy in trouble, natural disasters that are affecting people everywhere from Galveston to Szechuan Province in China, and struggling families right here in North Carolina communities that are facing severe financial, social, and health concerns. When we see these events, we naturally want to reach out and help. We can't leave our jobs and go where help is needed, but we can support those who are carrying out this important work by donating generously to the SECC. Whether you choose to support Alzheimer's research or the World Wildlife Federation, from A to Z your gift will help further the important work of these charities and make a meaningful contribution to our community.
"This year is the 22nd SECC campaign, and with your help, I am sure that this one will be the most successful campaign yet. I know Carolina cares, and by coming together to share what we have, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of our fellow citizens. Please join me and the Carolina community in giving all you can to make the Carolina Cares, Carolina Shares campaign a real success. Thank you."
