What is the SECC?

The State Employees Combined Campaign (SECC) is the only charitable giving program authorized for North Carolina state work sites. The SECC serves as a go-between that screens the participating charities and provides state employees with an easy, uniform way to support the work of charitable organizations. The UNC -SECC is organized by UNC employees who have volunteered their time and effort because they believe this year's theme, Carolina Cares—Carolina Shares, captures the caring spirit of the Carolina community.

I already support my favorite charity, why should I give to SECC?

The SECC can make every dollar of your contribution go further. By harnessing the volunteer power of our employees, the SECC keeps administrative costs as low as possible. In the past, SECC administrative costs have been well below 15% -- these lower costs mean that at least 85 cents of each dollar goes directly to the charity's work and not to overhead costs.

Is the SECC a United Way campaign?

No, it's even more! While many United Way agencies are listed, the SECC includes more than 900 local, state, national, and international charities.

Many charities are too small to hold a fund-raising event the size of the SECC campaign. The SECC gives charities of all sizes the opportunity to raise awareness of their work and to raise funds to support their varied missions. The 2008 Resource Guide lists the participating charities and their Web sites. You can designate which of these charities your gift to the SECC will benefit.

How are the charities chosen?

A charity must meet strict criteria to become a SECC agency. All SECC charities are screened for sound management principles, such as limits on administrative costs, and have a proven track record. State employees carefully review and monitor organizations funded by state employee gifts. To become a participating charity, organizations must apply each year and meet SECC screening criteria for sound management practices and fiscal integrity. It's a high standard.
