Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program
The Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program prepares graduate students for leadership roles in North Carolina's rapidly growing nonprofit sector and provides an in-depth examination of leadership issues within human services, education, the arts, and other nonprofit organizations.
There is an increasing need for nonprofit leaders who have core competencies in an expanding number of fields. Students enrolled in UNC's Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program can expect to learn a variety of competitive skills, including how to:
- Analyze financial statements
- Develop strategic marketing, advocacy and fundraising plans
- Understand 501c3 compliance issues
- Work with and develop a board of directors
- Effectively develop and manage staff
- Work with the media
Individuals from a variety of career fields can benefit from the program, including:
- Educators starting and operating charter schools
- Religious and community leaders managing human service organizations
- Veterans of the nonprofit world seeking to further develop their careers
Because most students pursuing the certificate are concurrently either pursuing a graduate degree or working, many certificate courses are conveniently scheduled in the evening.
Students who pursue the certificate or take certificate-listed courses as electives come from many graduate programs including: MPA, MBA, MSW, JD, MPH, MILS, MSA, MCRP, MDiv and various doctoral programs.
The Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program draws upon the expertise of faculty from the University's Schools of Business, Information and Library Science, Law, Public Health, Social Work, and Government, and from professionals in public agencies, foundations, businesses and the nonprofit community.
Interested participants who have earned a bachelor's degree can be admitted through the Division of Continuing Studies and attend classes on a space-available basis.
