Advanced Standing Distance Education MSW Program

Student Chris Solomon discusses the Advanced Standing Distance Education Program

This program is unique among advanced standing programs in the United States because it is tailored for the working adult who already has a baccalaureate degree in social work. The Advanced Standing Distance Education Program in Winston-Salem is part of the UNC-Chapel Hill family of extension of MSW programs. The UNC School of Social Work is recognized among the Top 10 programs in the nation.

Coursework in this MSW program focuses on the management and community practice concentration that prepares MSW students for a range of leadership careers, such as organizational and community development, social work interventions in large systems, system reform and policy or advocacy roles.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who will teach the courses?
Courses are taught by UNC-Chapel Hill faculty members and selected experienced contract faculty. Classes meet on Fridays.

2. How can the MSW degree help me?
The MSW often leads to career advancement such as movement into management or administrative positions. In addition, the MSW is required for advanced practice licensure in North Carolina.

3. How long will it take to get my MSW?
By following the outlined plan of study, a typical student can receive the MSW degree in 18 months.

4. Can I continue to work while enrolled in this program?
Yes. Classes only meet on Fridays. Although it may be difficult to work full-time if your field placement is outside your employing agency, many students continue to work. Because the curriculum in the distance education program is equivalent to the full-time program, all students must complete the same requirements.

5. Where will I attend classes?
All classes will be held at the Forsyth County Department of Social Services in Winston-Salem.

6. How do I apply?
Prospective students must submit two applications: one to the UNC-Chapel Hill Graduate School and one to the School of Social Work. Please see our application procedure.

7. When is the application deadline?
The deadline is Jan. 16 of the year you plan to enroll.

8. What are the tuition costs? How do I apply for student loans?
For current costs, please visit the Cashiers Office. Students admitted to the program may apply for federal student loans by completing a free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The priority deadline is March 15.
