Background Information
PURPOSE 
The purpose of this
project is to expand and strengthen the capacity of the School of Social
Work at the University of North Carolina to provide leadership education
for masters-level social work students and for public health social workers
in the MCH field.
This project addresses
the lack of MCH and public health content in MSW programs at a time when
the need for this training is critical due to major changes in the health
and social welfare systems.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The major goal of
this MCH Public Health Social Work Leadership Training Program is to contribute
to the advancement of maternal and child health through:
- Preparing
social work graduates with clinical competence and leadership skills
in maternal & child health;
- Developing
disseminating curricula, teaching models, and other educational
resources to enhance MCH content in social work programs;
- Continuing the
education of public health social workers for leadership roles in MCH;
and
- Providing consultation and
technical assistance to the social work MCH community.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES
- Implementation of a
leadership education program in public health social work which will
train 4-6 MSW students per year;
- Development of MCH
modules for 4 required courses or development of teaching modules for
social work curriculum;
- Dissemination of
these materials using the World Wide Web;
- The provision of an annual MCH
continuing education activity for social workers;
- Continuing education,
consultation, and technical assistance to the social work MCH community.
