Detention Program Social Worker


The Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (RMIAN) is a nonprofit organization that provides free immigration legal services to adults in immigration detention and to immigrant children. RMIAN’s Social Service Project (SSP) assists particularly vulnerable detained immigrant adults by providing wrap-around support, including help dealing with the stress of detention, support for clients’ legal cases, and planning for needed services upon clients’ release from detention. Through generous funding from The Denver Foundation’s Colorado Health Access Fund, RMIAN has an immediate opening for a full-time social worker to address the behavioral health needs of adults encountered in immigration detention.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintain caseload of detained and non-detained adult clients who are represented by RMIAN staff or volunteer attorneys, or who are representing themselves in their immigration proceedings
  • Through interdisciplinary model, collaborate closely with attorneys throughout clients’ cases
  • With clients, complete psychosocial assessments and identify and implement ways to deal with the stress of detention and current symptoms of trauma, depression, anxiety, and other behavioral health issues
  • As appropriate, administer screening tools to track clients’ behavioral health symptoms and guide referrals to appropriate services after clients’ release from detention
  • As appropriate, support clients’ legal cases by helping to draft written declarations, arranging pro bono forensic health evaluations, attending court hearings, etc.
  • Provide psychoeducation to clients, family, and caregivers about behavioral health and available support
  • Create plans for post-release services, including referrals to behavioral health services
  • Expand relationships with providers of behavioral health treatment, housing, and other advocates
  • Collect, synthesize, and report program data in compliance with rigorous grant evaluation requirements

Position Requirements:

  • Master of Social Work degree
  • Fluency in Spanish and English, both oral and written
  • Passion for RMIAN’s mission and demonstrated commitment to social justice
  • Commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration in a primarily legal services setting
  • Basic knowledge of immigration law or commitment to learning
  • Experience recognizing and responding to behavioral health issues, including trauma, depression, anxiety, serious mental illness, diminished mental competency, and substance dependence
  • Demonstrated cultural competency working with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Commitment to working with people with criminal histories
  • Interest in working in detention center setting
  • Familiarity with local social services, and experience and interest in program evaluation
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and often unpredictable environment

Salary: Starting at $36,000, dependent on experience, plus a generous benefits package
