Community Organizer
Waco Community Development revitalizes neighborhoods by promoting housing, community and economic development throughout Waco. To build strong neighborhoods, Waco Community Development remodels historic homes, builds new homes, educates potential homeowners through homebuyer education classes, facilitates neighborhood beautification projects and strengthens neighborhood schools through community organizing.
Summary of Responsibilities:
The Community Organizer is a dynamic, solution-oriented professional committed to engaging and developing neighborhood leadership. S/he works with staff and volunteers to accomplish the mission of Waco Community Development. His/Her primary task is to organize the parents and staff of Brook Avenue Elementary and West Avenue Elementary through the Parental Engagement Project. S/he works to develop leadership capabilities among school faculty, parents, and community stakeholders to strengthen the two schools and address neighborhood issues.
Essential Responsibilities:Organize parents, teachers, and community members through the Parental Engagement Project
Ø Conduct individual meetings with parents, teachers, and community members
Ø Facilitate house meetings of community members to discover areas of mutual interest
Ø Strengthen and support the Brook Avenue Elementary and West Avenue Elementary PTAs
Ø Help both schools plan and execute parental involvement events (e.g., Family Learning Nights)
Ø Coordinate training for teachers and parents on parental involvement and other issues
Ø Work with both schools and community organizations to address community issues
Participate in any community events/committees/associations
Ø Be actively involved in the Sanger Heights and Brook Oaks Neighborhood Associations
Ø Build relationships with churches and help them stay involved with the community
Fundraising
Ø Write grants to fund community projects
Ø Support Waco Community Development’s fundraising activities
Essential Qualities:
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations in urban communities
Demonstrated ability to bring disparate constituents together to achieve common goals
Demonstrated ability to initiate and maintain dialogue with individuals and organizations with diverse experience and viewpoints
Responsible, self-motivated, and able to carry out and prioritize multiple ongoing projects
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (Bi-lingual preferred)
Energetic, self-starter with a work style that balances independence and teamwork
Excellent time management skills, organizational skills and ability to work without direct supervision.
Educational Requirements
Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent required; training and/or experience in community organizing is preferred
Special Requirements:
Must be willing to work with a non-standard schedule including nights and weekends.
