Advanced Curriculum

Goals and Description
Distributional Requirements in the Advanced Curriculum

Goals and Description

The overall intent of the Advanced Curriculum is to accomplish the following objectives:

  1. Prepare students to enter an advanced level of practice characterized by knowledge and skills sufficient for competent, self-critical, accountable, and—ultimately—autonomous practice in a specialized field;
  2. Equip students with capabilities for performing the full range of practice activities from assessment to evaluation, in order to achieve direct service or macro practice outcomes in a selected field of practice;
  3. Enable students to engage in ethical practice and to identify with the social work profession; and
  4. Prepare students to carry out the mission of the School, recognizing the uniqueness of the region and specific concerns for disadvantaged, vulnerable, and oppressed individuals, families, and communities.

The Advanced Curriculum consists of distributional requirements and electives. Students take specific, required courses in each of the following areas: Human Behavior in the Social Environment (3 credit hours), Policy (3 credit hours), Practice (6 credit hours), Research (3 credit hours), and advanced Field Practica (12 credit hours). Courses in these areas are selected from lists approved by each concentration.

Full- and part-time students complete 36 hours in the Advanced Curriculum. This total includes three electives (9 credit hours). Students may take two courses in the Advanced Curriculum (6 credit hours) while completing the Foundation Curriculum (classroom courses and field practica). However, students may not enter Advanced Field Practica or continue in Advanced Curriculum classes until they complete the entire Foundation Curriculum.

Advanced standing students complete a total of 30 hours in the Advanced Curriculum. When they enter in the summer, they take three courses (10 credit hours). During the following fall and spring, advanced standing students complete required courses for the Advanced Curriculum and one elective (3 credit hours).

Distributional Requirements in the Advanced Curriculum

Courses in the Advanced Curriculum are designed to build on the knowledge base acquired in the Foundation Curriculum. Students must successfully complete Foundation pre-requisite courses before enrolling in Advanced courses (see chart on page 11). In addition, students are required to take nine credit hours in elective courses. Electives may be selected from offerings of the School of Social Work, from other schools or departments within the University, and from other institutions. Any course within the School can serve as an elective if it is not being used to meet Foundation requirements or distributional requirements in the Advanced Curriculum. Elective courses must be taken at the graduate level. They must complement the student's concentration, and they must be relevant to the student's learning and career goals. Electives should be approved by the student's faculty advisor.
