Kindergarten - Lesson 1

If You're Happy and You Know It

Objectives:

  1. The learner will be able to identify and describe two feelings: Happy and Sad.
  2. The learner will maintain conversation and discussions by attending to oral presentations. (SCS - LA 4.04)

Materials:

Happy and Sad face masks, (optional: paper plates, craft sticks)

Introduction

Introduce the concept of feelings. Explain that people have many different types of feelings. We can use words to describe how we feel, or our faces may show what emotion we are feeling. Ask the students to make a sad face, and to look around the room at the faces of their friends. Discuss what they observed. Then ask them to do the same thing with a happy face.

Activity I: Face Masks

Give each student a happy face and a sad face to color. You can pre-cut the masks or let the students cut them out. Ask the students to describe the masks they were given and the emotion each mask represents.

Teacher Tip: Students can paste the faces on paper plates and/or craft sticks.

Activity II: How do They Feel?

Explain to the students that you are going to read about some children who are having happy or sad feelings. Tell the students they will need to decide if each child you read about is feeling happy or sad. Students can stand up and hold their happy mask over their faces if they think the child is happy or, if they think the child is sad, they can hold up the sad mask.

Happy and Sad Examples:

Tara got to go to her friend's house to play today.

Joey did not get to go to recess because he got in trouble.

Shawn got a present from his mom today.

Carlos broke his favorite truck.

Lauren found a dollar on the ground at the grocery store.

Jamal won his basketball game.

Hanna went to see the new cartoon at the move theater.

Alexa had to go to her room because she pushed her brother.

Elijah found the dinosaur toy he lost under the bed.

Anna got the smallest cookie at snack time.

Ellen went to the fair with her family.

Jose built a tunnel in the sandbox with his friend.
