Intake in Child Welfare Services

Intake in Child Welfare Services is a two-day, competency-based curriculum designed to prepare social workers to receive reports of child maltreatment, to assess whether those reports meet the criteria for child abuse, neglect, or dependency in North Carolina, and to participate in the decision as to how the agency will respond. Much of the learning involves participant interaction, and participants are expected to engage in skill practice through experiential and group activities. Topics include:

  • Reporting child maltreatment,
  • Relating to the caller,
  • Educating the public,
  • Intake interviews,
  • Screening,
  • Consultation,
  • Documentation,
  • Biological clock issues,
  • Triage, and
  • Safety issues.
