Faculty resources

The faculty of the School of Social Work represents a diversity of interests and specialization and has a distinguished record of scholarly achievement. All faculty members engage in research and consistently publish or present their findings. The faculty generated several million dollars each year in research contracts and grants from national, state and local sources, providing opportunities for graduate students to be involved in cutting-edge research. Faculty research solidly advances the organizing theme of social intervention, and ongoing projects embody a commitment to examining the interrelationships among levels of social intervention.

Faculty members in the School of Social Work maintain an ongoing agenda of research and technical consultation with research centers and human services agencies in the state. These include:

North Carolina

  • Department of Human Resources
  • Division of Social Services
  • Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services
  • Division of Child Development
  • Division of Aging

UNC Hospitals, Duke Medical Center, the VA Medical Center and the Research Triangle Institute.

Established on October 1, 1996, the Jordan Institute for Families, designed to strengthen families and help children in need, will serve as the organizing focus for the research, program development, and technical assistance activities of the faculty. These activities have aimed at developing and improving services and instituting research programs addressing needs relating to families and children, physical and behavioral health, and the aging. The Smart Agency provides technical assistance and training to human service agencies to build infrastructure for human services development, research and program evaluation activities. As the Jordan Institute for Families develops, it will foster collaborative research programs with other family scholars at Chapel Hill and at other campuses of the University of North Carolina System.

Doctoral students are able to to serve as research assistants and to complete their required research practica in research programs of the Jordan Institute for Families (as well as on other sponsored and unsponsored projects), gaining practical research training along with essential financial support.
