Summary
of MSW/PhD Course Plan
- Students without
a master's degree admitted to the MSW/PhD Continuum take primary master's
courses their first year and join the following year's cohort of doctoral
students.
Students with
a master's degree in another discipline are encouraged to take
only master's courses their first year and join the following year's
cohort of doctoral students, but have the option of beginning
doctoral and master's courses simultaneously.
- Students complete
(or exempt and replace) all MSW Foundation courses, take the three MSW
concentration advanced courses in policy, practice and human behavior,
and complete the Foundation field practicum.
- Unless the student
is granted an exception by completing the required form and obtaining
the appropriate signatures of permission, all advanced concentration
courses must be taken in one concentration.
- In order to ensure
students the flexibility to complete the required master's program courses,
they will be permitted to register for required advanced curriculum
courses even though they may be concurrently completing a prerequisite
for the course and/or might not otherwise be eligible as first year
students for the courses.
- The practice elective
in the MSW Advanced Curriculum may be satisfied through SoWo 312 Design
of Social Interventions.
- SoWo 303, the first doctoral research
course, can replace SoWo 102 to satisfy the Foundation Research Requirement.
- The master's program
Advanced Research Requirement may be satisfied through SoWo 314, the doctoral measurement
course.
- MSW electives are
satisfied by other doctoral program courses.
Note: The MSW/PhD Continuum and the PhD program
for students without a MSW are highly individualized programs, and plans for them should be developed
with the doctoral program chair, MSW advisors and Director of Field Work.
