MSW/Ph.D. Continuum

1. Students may be admitted as MSW/PHD applicants or may be admitted during their first year in the masters program. Students admitted as MSW/PHD applicants take only masters courses their first year and join the following year's cohort of doctoral students.

2. Students admitted to this program will count in the school's MSW quota.

3. Applicants to the MSW/PHD program will be considered through a joint admissions process including the Chair of the Doctoral Program, the Director of Admissions, and part or all of the Admissions Committee.

4. Exempting SoWo 102 is likely for the kind of student admitted to this program. Applicants will be provided with a copy of the syllabus for the course. Rationale: Increasing integration of research and practice is a goal of the masters program, including the core curriculum. We assume that we will attract students with a strong undergraduate research background to the MSW/ Ph.D. continuum.

5. The MSW/ Ph.D. continuum may provide a more convenient option for people with masters degrees in another discipline to earn the MSW along with their Ph.D.

Admissions

Admissions Requirements for the M.S.W./Ph.D. Continuum:

Plan for a M.S.W./Ph.D. Continuum

Summary of Plan

Students complete (or exempt and replace) all MSW Foundation courses, and take the three MSW concentration advanced required courses in policy, practice, and human behavior. The masters program advanced research requirement is satisfied either through the doctoral research course (303),or the measurement course (314). MSW electives are replaced by doctoral program courses. Students complete the first and second year masters field practicum.

CURRICULUM for M.S.W./Ph.D. Continuum:

This is a proposed possible schedule. Students may vary in the exact time that they schedule courses. Any Foundation course that is exempted through proficiency examination must be replaced by a more advanced masters program course.

Complicating Issues

CSWE maintains a post-M.S.W. practice experience requirement for teaching practice courses in accredited SW programs. Graduates who do not have two years of post-M.S.W. direct service experience may not teach direct practice course work. Lack of practice experience can be a central factor when students seek employment. We will address this through an organized program to assist students after they are awarded their MSW to find direct practice employment during the summers and while they worked on their dissertation. This would not only meet CSWE requirements, but it would also promote adequate socialization to the profession, a necessity for social work research relating to practitioners and practice settings.
