Hayden Dawes has been chosen to participate in “The American Professoriate,” a seminar co-taught by Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz. Dawes was nominated by UNC School of Social Work for the highly selective seminar and will participate in fall 2021.
Beginning his third year as a doctoral student, Dawes earned his MSW at North Carolina State University in 2014 and has served as vice-president and as communications chair of the board of directors for the N.C. Society for Clinical Social Work. In 2020, he was chosen as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Research Scholar.
Dawes and other doctoral students selected for “The American Professoriate” seminar represent a wide range of academic disciplines at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Guskiewicz describes the seminar as “an intense discussion about the future of higher education, led by some of the very people who will have to build it.” The doctoral students will examine issues facing higher education today, including faculty diversity, student mental health, and public policy decisions that affect universities, as well as the mission and history of higher education.
In past semesters, the seminar has provided students with direct access to renowned professors from UNC-Chapel Hill and other universities, including Buck Goldstein, an economist who is Entrepreneur-in-Residence and a Professor of the Practice (UNC-Chapel Hill); Matthew Springer, Hussman Distinguished Professor of Education Reform (UNC-Chapel Hill); and David Markovits, author of “The Meritocracy Trap” (Yale University).
