Faculty, students present at annual CSWE Conference in Orlando, Fla.

UNC School of Social Work faculty members and students participated in the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) annual program meeting in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 8-11. This year’s theme was “Expanding Interprofessional Education to Achieve Social Justice,” which according to CSWE, “ reflects a call to action for social work educators to infuse interprofessional education into curricula to prepare students for collaborative practice focused on social justice.”

UNC faculty members and students were among those scheduled to present and included:

  • Todd Jensen and Rebecca Brigham: “Field Evaluation Instruments Designed to Measure Social Work Competencies: A Psychometric Analysis.”
  • Robin Sansing, Brigham and Denise Dews: “Transgender/Gender Nonconforming Students in the Field: Experiences and Best Path Strategies.”
  • Iris Carlton-LaNey, who presented with faculty from Morgan State University and Simmons College: “#Reclaiming My Time: The National Association of Black Social Workers at 50.”
  • Rachel Goode, Mariah Cowell, Tonya Van Deinse and Dielle McMillan: “Confronting Oppression in the Age of Trump: Are our MSW Students Prepared?”
  • Lisa Zerden and Brianna Lombardi, Ph.D. ’18: “Promoting Health Equity: Describing Social Worker Education and Practice in Integrated Healthcare.”
  • Tauchiana Williams, Andrea Murray-Lichtman, Carlton-LaNey and Travis Albritton: “Teaching Social Justice: Roadblocks and Strategies from Classroom to Practice.”
  • Albritton also presented with faculty from Duke University: “Integrating Theology and Social Work: Lessons from a Dual-Degree Capstone Course.”

  • Ronni Zuckerman and Theresa Palmer: “Promoting Preparation for Interprofessional Collaboration by Incorporating Neurodevelopmental Concepts in HBSE Coursework.”
  • Murray-Lichtman and Amy Levine: “Social Justice in Field Settings: How Other Professionals Integrate Social Justice Education.”
  • Dews, Meryl Kanfer, Palmer and Zerden: “Creative Strategies for Interprofessional Education with MSW and Nurse Practitioner Students.”
  • Brigham and Laurie Selz-Campbell presented with faculty from N.C. State University and UNC-Charlotte: “Navigating Racism in Social Work Field Education.”
  • Josh Hinson: “Refugee Health and Wellness: Integrating Interprofessional Education into a Social Work Curriculum.”
  • Sharon Thomas presented with faculty from Winston-Salem State University, N.C. Central University and N.C. State University: “Strategies for Increasing MSW Program Diversity-Partnering with a Historically Black College/University.”
  • Zerden and Kanfer: “Lessons Learned from Two BHWET Projects: Tips for IPE and Integrated Care.”

During the conference, Zerden was also presented with the CSWE Distinguished Recent Contributions to Social Work Education Award. Zerden is senior associate dean for Master of Social Work Education at UNC.
