Marie Weil retires after 30 years of service at UNC School of Social Work

Faculty members, staff, former colleagues and friends gathered this month to celebrate professor Marie Weil, who retired this spring after 30 years of service to the UNC School of Social Work. As one of the School’s founding associate directors of the Jordan Institute for Families, Weil spent most of her research career focused on services for families and children and program evaluation. An especially prolific scholar in the field of community practice work, Weil is founding editor of the Journal of Community Practice and editor of the much-referenced, “The Handbook of Community Practice.” In addition, she has authored or co-authored nearly 20 books and more than 50 book chapters.

“Marie has been a …stalwart, strong and brave cornerstone of our macro and community practice,” praised professor and long-time colleague Gary Nelson. “She has been a tireless advocate for vulnerable families and communities, not just in our School but for the field of social work.”

Weil joined the School in 1988 as a professor and associate dean.
