Davis delivers 2017 Bobby Boyd Leadership Lecture

Larry E. Davis, dean of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work, delivered this year’s 4th annual Bobby Boyd Leadership Lecture. Davis, who spoke on “Racism in America: A Call to Action for Social Work Researchers,” is considered a leading scholar of the narrative about race in America and its role in social justice.

Dr. Davis’ lecture was part of a three-day visit with students, faculty and staff. During his time with the School, Davis met with the School’s Diversity Committee, where he discussed his work with the Center for Race and Social Problems and his lifelong commitment to promote a more racially equitable society. In addition, Davis participated in a discussion with faculty and Ph.D. students focused on “Having Difficult Conversations in the Classroom,” and he joined faculty and staff in a book club discussion of “Why Are They Angry With Us: Essays on Race,” which Davis authored. The book touches on themes of racial identity, internalized racism and the legacy of slavery.
