Please join us for the 3rd annual Bobby Boyd Leadership Lecture, on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at 5:30 p.m., at the UNC School of Social Work. This event is free and open to the public.
Carol Wilson Spigner, DSW, will speak on, “Social Policy and Social Change: Lessons Learned From Integrating Policy and Practice in the Real World.”
“Social work has, as one of its critical values, promoting social changes that advance the well-being of vulnerable groups,” said Spigner. “This challenge is met not only by providing direct services, but also by changing the organizations and social environments in which we live and through which we provide assistance.”
With 40 years of experience as an advocate for improved outcomes and better treatment of children, families and communities, Spigner will examine lessons drawn from her policy, advocacy and research work, and how they apply to social justice challenges faced today.
The lecture will be in the auditorium of the Tate-Turner-Kuralt building (School of Social Work) at 325 Pittsboro St. on the UNC campus. Parking will be available in the deck of the FedEx Global Education building on the corner of Pittsboro and McCauley Streets.
About the Speaker
Carol W. Spigner, DSW, retired from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice in June 2010. She was an associate professor and clinician educator for a decade, directing the social policy program and teaching policy and macro practice. Prior to joining the university, Spigner was the associate commissioner of the Children’s Bureau at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families (ACF), and was responsible for the administration of federal child welfare programs. She provided leadership in developing guidelines to states on maltreatment and oversight of research and demonstration programs focused on neglect.
Spigner has received several teaching and professional awards; has served on local, state and national committees in the areas of child welfare and social policy; and has published a variety of articles in the areas of cultural competency, permanency planning and relative care. She was a senior associate at the Center for the Study of Social Policy, Washington, D.C., and the director of the National Child Welfare Leadership Center, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Additionally, she has held professorships at UNC and the University of California, Los Angeles.
A native of Los Angeles, Spigner began her career working for the L.A. County Departments of Adoption and Probation. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California at Riverside, and her graduate degrees from the University of Southern California.
About the Bobby Boyd Leadership Lecture
UNC School of Social Work alumnus and Board of Advisors member Bobby Boyd, MSW ’69, received a Distinguished Alumni Award in May 2009. He retired in Oct. 2008 from a 30-year career as director of Catawba County Social Services.
The lecture series is made possible by the Bobby Boyd Leadership Fund at the School of Social Work, which was established by Boyd’s former staff at the Catawba County Department of Social Services, the Social Services Board and Catawba County Commissioners.
With the purpose of sustaining Boyd’s vision of focusing on results and excellence in public service, the fund supports leadership development and opportunities for UNC School of Social Work students. The Bobby Boyd Lecture Series provides a forum for leaders from various fields of practice to discuss their experiences and their use of specific strategies to provide leadership aimed to promote social change interventions.
