Clinical Instructor and doctoral student Annie Francis was selected for the Future Faculty Fellowship Program at UNC’s Center for Faculty Excellence. It is a semester-long program that introduces graduate students to evidence-based teaching practices, helps them understand the roles and responsibilities of faculty members at different types of institutions of higher education and helps them reflect on their professional goals.

Professor Rebecca Macy is planning a day-long event entitled, “Visioning Summit: North Carolina’s Children & Domestic Violence,” which will be held on Wed., Jan. 13, from 10-3 at Extraordinary Ventures in Chapel Hill. The summit will bring together key stakeholders from the child welfare, children’s mental health and domestic violence service sectors; showcase innovative strategies concerning child exposure to domestic violence; foster coordination and communication among those working to address child exposure to domestic violence in North Carolina; and develop recommendations to address key challenges concerning child exposure to domestic violence in North Carolina. Assistant Professor Latoya Small is the recipient of a Junior Faculty Development Award in the amount of $7,500 by the UNC Committee on Faculty Research and Study Leaves, administered by the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost.

Clinical Assistant Professor Bebe Smith traveled to New York in December with leaders from the N.C. Dept. of Health and Human Services, MCOs and provider organizations, to work in a train-the-trainer group with Dan Herman at Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. This effort will support the broader dissemination of the Critical Time Intervention (CTI) project in North Carolina. CTI is a program designed to connect individuals with mental illness and complex social needs with services and support.

Smith led a film screening and discussion on the topic, “Speak with Vulnerability and Listen with Compassion: How Stories Build Community and Create a Pathway to Healing,” on Monday, Nov. 30, in the UNC School of Social Work’s auditorium. The event included a screening of the animated documentary film, “Bipolar Girl Rules the World and Other Stories,” and a discussion with Smith and the filmmaker, Dawn Dreyer. Clinical Associate Professor Lisa de Saxe Zerden was a panelist at a Carolina seminar on closing the gap in healthcare education, “Building Collaborations: Lessons Learned from a Pilot Interprofessional Course on Population Health.” It was held on Dec. 7 at the UNC School of Nursing.
