Third edition of Fraser’s textbook is published

The third edition of best-selling textbook, Social Policy for Children and Families: A Risk and Resilience Perspective, edited by UNC School of Social Work Professor Mark Fraser with Jeffrey Jenson of the University of Denver, has been published by Sage.

This edition offers new evidence that a public health framework based on ecological theory and principles of risk, protection, and resilience is essential for the successful design and implementation of social policy.

Features new to the edition include:

  • In every chapter, contributing authors identify and critique new policy directives and identify implications of the recently-passed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
  • Information on the prevalence of child and adolescent behavior in eight substantive policy domains is updated.
  • Important new evidence about risk and protective factors associated with child and adolescent problem behaviors across key policy areas is reviewed.
  • The book’s integrated framework that informs the design, implementation, and evaluation of polices derived from evidence of risk and resilience has been updated.

In addition, a companion website was developed that contains PowerPoints and tests for instructors, and supplemental readings and other resources for students.

Several UNC School of Social Work faculty co-authored chapters, including Fraser, Paul Lanier, Kathleen Rounds and Matthew Howard; and doctoral candidate William Hall.
The book is available online from Sage Publications.

Fraser is the John A. Tate Distinguished Professor for Children in Need, and the Associate Dean for Research, at the UNC School of Social Work.
