Faculty and staff briefs

Jodi Flick presented the keynote address at the Survivors of Suicide Loss annual conference in Raleigh on Nov. 22. She spoke on, “Changing our Perspective on Suicide.”

Sherry Mergner will be facilitating a program called, “Raising Special Kids: A Group Program for Parents of Children Recently Diagnosed with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities,” which begins in February at the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities.

On Nov. 5, School of Social Work Field Education faculty members Ronni Zuckerman and Jean Livermore piloted a new, advanced training for field instructors, “Transitioning from Supervisor to Teacher.” The focus of this 4-hour training was the field program’s model of educational supervision. It provided concrete teaching strategies and opportunities for instructors to practice using educational supervision techniques to assist students in integrating theories learned in the classroom into field experiences. As a pilot project, participation was limited to 15 field instructors. All slots were filled within 3 hours of email notification of the event, and a waiting list was created. Participants provided detailed feedback and suggestions to the field program. The training will be revised and offered again to a broader audience in the spring. It will also be developed into a training module to be shared with other social work field education programs, as a part of a new partnership entitled “Trigo.” Trigo partners include ECU, NCSW and UNC-Charlotte.
