Guo, Chapman and Chowa present research in China

Professor Shenyang Guo, Associate Professor Mimi Chapman, and Assistant Professor Gina Chowa traveled to China in May to meet with some of our international research partner institutions, and to present at a seminar entitled, “Social Work Practice and Research Under the Setting of Globalization,” at the China Youth University of Political Science.

Guo spoke on, “Shaping Social Work Science: What Should Quantitative Researchers Do?” Chapman presented on, “Family and Youth Migration Experiences: Global Perspectives from the U.S. and China.” Chowa spoke on, “Asset Development as a Strategy for Addressing Development in Africa: Lessons from Intervention Research.” UNC School of Social Work doctoral student Shiyou Wu assisted with translating the lecture materials.

The group visited with faculty and students from a number of schools while in China, including: East China Normal University, East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), China Youth University of Political Science and Capital Normal University. They were also able to do some sightseeing in Shanghai and Beijing, and met with former UNC School of Social Work visiting scholars Meihua Zhu of ECUST and Yan Ming of Capital Normal University.

The meetings and seminars provided valuable opportunities to exchange experiences in social work education, practice and research.
