MSW student Laura Garlock was selected by UNC Global to receive an award from the Global Partnership Fund in the amount of $2,000 towards summer travel in support of her collaboration with Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador. Garlock was instrumental in developing partnerships between the School of Social Work, UNC Global, the Institute for the Study of the Americas, the Carolina Latina/o Collaborative, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and the Pachaysana Institute in Ecuador to bring Daniel Bryan to UNC. Bryan is the executive director of the Pachaysana Institute in Ecuador, and he presented on petroleum extraction and its impact on the Ecuadorian Amazon. Garlock will be going to Ecuador to help develop study abroad opportunities for UNC students.

Doctoral student Jamie Hughes was elected to a national leadership post in the Gerontological Society of America, the premier interdisciplinary organization of researchers in aging. The new officers will assume their roles during GSA’s 67th Annual Scientific Meeting, November 5-9 in Washington, D.C. Hughes is the Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization Chair-Elect.

MSW student Virginia Lewis received an award from the UNC Center for Global Initiatives to intern in the Psychology Department at the University of Porto, Portugal. Lewis received the Lori Lewis Schipper International Internship Award.

MSW students Allie Hill and Erin Magee, and Albert Thrower (MSW ’14) accompanied Dean Jack Richman and Clinical Instructor Josh Hinson, in a presentation to the UNC Board of Trustees on May 21. They spoke on the School of Social Work’s “Refugee Mental Health and Wellness Initiative,” a collaborative project launched last year with the nonprofit Church World Service in Durham and the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants.

MSW student Leah Smith is featured in an adorable Glenwood Elementary School student-produced “Gator News” story about Farm to School Week. She was interviewed by a fourth grade boy (see timestamps 7:40 and 10:23 in the video below). Smith’s field placement this year was at the School.
