Renowned dancers from Taiwan to speak on mindfulness, March 31

The UNC School of Social Work and Carolina Performing Arts are hosting a panel discussion, “Mindfulness, Art and Tradition: A Conversation with Cloud Gate Dance Theatre.” It will be held at noon on Monday, March 31, in the Tate-Turner-Kuralt Building (School of Social Work) Auditorium.

The oldest Chinese contemporary dance company in the world, Cloud Gate dancers receive training in meditation, breathing exercises, and calligraphy in addition to ballet, modern dance and martial arts. Dancers learn to blend traditional Asian approaches to mindfulness with Western techniques.

You’ll hear from the artists themselves and explore new ways to consider mindfulness in practice, such as:

  • What can Asian concepts of reverence and meditation teach us about focus in the midst of stressful lives?
  • What linkages can we draw to practice in the helping professions?
  • How do dancers who are constantly in motion remain aware of their presence and maintain this focus?

The discussion will be moderated by School of Social Work Associate Professor Mimi Chapman and Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow for Arts Aaron Shackelford. It is free and open to all.

Carolina Performing Arts is presenting Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan’s “Songs of the Wanderers” at UNC’s Memorial Hall on April 2.
