Deborah Barrett was interviewed on a blog radio show, Living with Hope, hosted by Trudy Thomas.

Barrett has a new post on Psychology Today, on the DSM-5 and its treatment of chronic pain.

Barrett has a featured article in the summer 2013 edition of Pain Pathways Magazine, entitled “Paintracking: Finding Comfort,” about touch, temperature and other techniques for soothing pain.

Natasha Bowen and Rebecca Macy have been officially approved by the UNC Board for Trustees for their promotion to full professor.

Denisé Dews was one of 150 competitively-selected social work professionals from across the United States recently invited to attend a 1.5 day leadership skills-building course funded by the National Cancer Institute. “ExCEL in Social Work: Excellence in Cancer Education and Leadership” is offered annually in partnership with City of Hope, the Association of Oncology social Work and the Association of Pediatric Oncology Social Workers. The goal of this program is to improve the delivery of psychosocial care for oncology patients by enhancing the clinical and leadership skills of oncology social workers.

Jodi Flick is presenting a workshop, “Suicide: Prevention, intervention, and postvention,” at Catawba Valley Behavioral Health in Hickory on June 14.

Matthew Howard attended the Harvard Institutes of Higher Education Management Development Program, at Harvard Graduate School of Education, June 2-14. Admission is nationally competitive and a certificate is awarded for completion. Its purpose to is train attendees in budgeting, planning, human resource management, and other administrative skills essential to successful education management.

Paul Smokowski recently went to Washington, D.C. to participate in a grants review panel for NICHD on community-based participatory research.

Smokowski and his research team have three articles accepted for publication: “Demographic, psychological, and school environment correlates of bullying victimization and school hassles in rural youth,” in the Journal of Criminology, with Shenyang Guo; “Implementation science for parenting interventions: How delivery format impacts the Parenting Wisely program,” in Research on Social Work Practice; and “Obstacles to getting ahead: How assimilation mechanisms impact Mexican immigrant families,” in Social Work in Public Health.

Smokowski has accepted a position at the School of Social Work at Arizona State University. He will become the foundation professor for Child and Family Resilience in the School of Social Work and the associate director for Youth Violence Prevention, Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center, at Arizona State University’s College of Public Programs. He will remain at UNC part-time for the next two years as he completes his work on the North Carolina Center for Excellence in Youth Violence Prevention (NC-ACE) project.

Lisa Zerden, Josh Hinson, and recent MSW/MPH graduate Arianna Taboada will present their paper, “Carolina del Norte and the New South: Social work practice with new Latino immigrant communities,” at the 12th Annual Social Equity Leadership Conference at N.C. State University. The conference highlights globally engaged and locally responsible issues involving social equity in the nonprofit, education and policy arena for at-risk communities including immigrants, the elderly issues around housing, environment, transportation and sustainability.
