Mimi Chapman is participating in a faculty seminar this semester called Arts@TheCore, sponsored by Carolina Performing Arts, that explores the subject of teaching with the arts. Participants are UNC faculty members with some interest and experience in using arts performances in courses throughout the academic curriculum. Seminar participants will attend performances, discuss readings, share ideas about incorporating the arts into classroom instruction, and collect examples of best practices in arts integration. Chapman wrote a blog post about this initiative.
Chris Egan was elected to serve as president of the Arc of North Carolina Housing Boards. The Boards own over 300 properties that provide housing for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental illness. The Arc of NC serves as property manager for these homes and dozens more that are owned by other organizations, providing housing for over 2,500 people with disabilities in North Carolina. The UNC School of Social Work is also connected to this work through alumna Nicole Kiefer, MSW ’05, who serves as assistant director of housing resources for The Arc of NC.
Jodi Flick will be the keynote speaker at the 8th Annual Youth Violence Prevention Conference, Fri., March 15, in Charlotte. The theme of the conference is, “When Violence Turns Inward: Understanding and Preventing Youth Self-Injury.” She is also leading a breakout session on coping with grief and loss following suicide. Kim Strom-Gottfried wrote an article for UNC’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities site, on “The Challenges of Academic Leadership.” Strom-Gottfried is the associate director of the IAH Academic Leadership Program.
Doctoral candidate Tiffany Washington is profiled in Carolina Connections, a UNC online newsletter about how private giving is making a difference in the lives of Carolina’s students, faculty, staff and patients as well as in local communities, across the state and around the globe. Deborah Barrett has an article in the winter 2013 edition of TNA Quarterly: The Journal of the Facial Pain Association (p. 5-9), “Maintaining a Positive Attitude.” The same article was posted recently on Pro-Health.
A baseline report from the YouthSave Ghana experiment was recently published. Gina Chowa is the lead author of the report and principal investigator of the project.
