Faculty updates

Deborah Barrett won the Carrboro ArtsCenter’s Tenth Annual Playslam on Nov. 17 for a play she wrote.

Barrett conducted a webinar on Nov. 14 for the Portland Fibromyalgia Group. Intended listeners were individuals suffering from chronic pain and/or fatigue syndromes to understand and improve their experience.

She gave a workshop for mental health professionals on “Approaching Dialectical Behavioral Therapy,” on Nov. 8, at the Levin JCC as part of their Clinical Connections series.

The Facial Pain Association will include several of Barrett’s articles on pain management in their TNA’s Quarterly magazine.

Barrett conducted a workshop in Asheville on Dec. 14, on “Collaborative Care for Living Well with Chronic Pain.”

Worth Bolton conducted a training on “PTSD, Substance Abuse and Returning OEF/OIF Guard and Reserve Veterans,” on Dec. 14 in Charlotte.

Gary Cuddeback is quoted in an online article by North Carolina Health News,  “Mental Health Court Offers an Alternate Path.”

Jodi Flick conducted a workshop on “Bipolar Disorder and its Impact on the Family,” on Dec. 3 in Charlotte. She also trained law enforcement officers from several cities and counties on “Suicide Assessment and Intervention,” on Dec. 13 in Hillsborough at their Crisis Intervention Training series.

Lisa Zerden presented a talk on Nov. 18 to undergraduate students in the First Year Service Corps on the social determinants of health, entitled, “Beyond the Clinic: Health as a Social Issue.”

Faculty and doctoral students present at CSWE meeting

A number of faculty and students from the School of Social Work participated in the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) annual program meeting in Washington, D.C., Nov. 9-12. This year’s theme was “Social Work: A Capital Venture.”

Presenters included faculty members Rebecca Brigham, Trenette Clark, Denise Dews, Marilyn Ghezzi, Anne Jones, Jean Livermore, Sarah Naylor, Jack Richman, Amelia Roberts-Lewis, Tina Souders, Sharon Thomas, Liza Zerden, and doctoral student Christopher Wretman.

Publications

Gina Chowa and doctoral student Rainier Masa have an article published in the Journal of the Society for Social Work and Research, “Wealth Effects of an Asset-Building Intervention Among Rural Households in Sub-Saharan Africa.”

Amanda Sheely has an article published in Social Work, a journal of the National Association of Social Workers, “Devolution and Welfare Reform: Re-evaluating ‘Success.'”

Kim Strom-Gottfried has a new column in Ethics Newsline, a newsletter of the Institute for Global Ethics. Her recently published commentaries are “Petraeus’s Fall and Punishment-By-Resignation: Worthy Or Wasteful?” and “The Ethics Of Political Brinksmanship.”
