Students get up-close look at community social work

By Susan White

Nearly two dozen MSW students at UNC’s School of Social Work got an up-close look at community social work this semester by visiting with practitioners and nonprofit leaders in Siler City, N.C. With a population of 7,800, half of which are Latino, this small town just 30 miles southwest of Chapel Hill, offered students many lessons, including on how immigration issues, job losses, and a lagging economy have challenged schools, town government, and nonprofit groups.
