Mimi Chapman, a UNC faculty engaged scholar, presented at a seminar on “Art and Engaged Scholarship in Health: National Models and Current Work at the Ackland Art Museum.”

The session provided an overview of work done in museum/academic/community partnerships at Carolina and other major universities, presented a case study of one UNC partnership, and provided a review of key resources at the Ackland Art Museum.

Gina Chowa presented in a panel discussion on “Ethical Dilemmas in International Development Models” at UNC’s Campus Y on Jan. 27. The program was on ethics and challenges of global service work.

Michal Grinstein-Weiss and Clinton Key traveled to Cleveland in January to participate in a meeting organized by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland (FRBC) on asset building for ex-offenders.  Grinstein-Weiss and team were invited to help explore ideas for a proposed randomized control trial aiming to test an asset building intervention for a select group of newly released ex-offenders in Ohio and New York. The research aims to address whether increasing the opportunity cost of criminal behavior and setting long-term goals improve the job-market and life outcomes of formerly incarcerated individuals. The convening held on Jan. 18 included stakeholders from the FRBC and New York, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, the Cuyahoga County Executive Office of Health & Human Services – Office of Reentry, Cleveland/ Cuyahoga County Workforce Investment Board, Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, and several community organizations working with ex-offenders. As a research associate with the FRBC, Grinstein-Weiss and team will continue to work with the group to develop the intervention and experimental study on asset building for ex-offenders.

Kim Strom-Gottfried presented “Moral Courage for Making Ethical Choices” at the 2nd Annual Leadership Initiative Speakers Series at NCCU on Jan. 20.
