Alterman ’11 awarded congressional fellowship

Elina Alterman, MSW/MPH ’11, was awarded a Women’s Research and Education Institute (WREI) Fellowship to work as a legislative aide in Washington, D.C.

The mission of the WREI is to identify issues affecting women in their roles in the family, workplace and public arena and to inform and help shape the public policy debate on these issues. WREI awards annual fellowships to a select number of graduate students with a proven commitment to equity for women. Fellows gain practical policymaking experience and graduate credit as they work from January to August as Congressional legislative aides. Fellows are selected on the basis of academic competence as well as their demonstrated interest in the public policy process. They are expected to be articulate, adaptable and to have strong writing skills. Only students who are currently in, or have recently completed, a graduate or professional-degree program at an accredited institution in the United States are eligible.

“I’ll be starting in January, and now my task is to go through all of members of the House, make a list of who I’d like to work for, and then interview with them,” said Alterman. “I am so excited – this is literally my dream come true!”
