School hosts appreciation day for field instructors

On Wednesday, May 19 the School of Social Work held its annual Field Instructors and Task Supervisors’ Appreciation Day. About 120 field instructors attended the free day-long event which included a continental breakfast, awards ceremony, lunch and continuing education workshops.

Every year the School chooses a few agencies to honor who have been especially helpful and supportive of the Field Ed program and who provide outstanding internships for our students. Recognition awards were presented to Catholic Charities – The Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, Family Violence and Rape Crisis Services of Chatham County, Interact of Wake County and Structure House.

Dr. Melissa Grady presented the keynote address, “Between the Rock and the Hard Place: How to Implement Evidence-Based Practice in the Real World.” The following workshops were also presented: “Will You Be My Friend: How Technology Has Altered Professional Boundaries in the 21st Century,” by faculty member Tina Souders; “Demystifying Leadership: Using Our Own Definitions to Create Social Change,” by faculty member Mat Despard; and “Rules of Engagement: Understanding and Connecting with Latino Clients,” by Karla Siu (MSW ’03).

“Our field instructors are not paid for the hard work they do with our students, so this Appreciation Day is one of the concrete ways we can show our gratitude to them,” said field advisor Marilyn Ghezzi.
