How Do NC Boomers Compare to US Boomers and NC’s Current Older Adults?
Compared to US Boomers, they
have lower household incomes
have lower levels of education
are more likely to live in rural areas
are more likely to be African American
Compared to NC’s Older Adults, they
are much more likely to have finished high school
have much higher household incomes during their young adult years
are less likely to be married and have fewer children
have come closer to income equality for women and African Americans
Notes:
This slide, too, largely speaks for itself.
Throughout the presentation, unless otherwise specified, all comparisons of younger boomers, older boomers, and older adults or “their parents’ generation” refers to all three groups at ages 25 through 34. This means older boomers in 1980, younger boomers in 1990, and today’s older adults in 1950.
Household incomes are higher both because of real dollar increases in salaries and because more women are working outside the home.
The increase in income equality represents only a small step as is we will see later in the presentation.
