Notes:
Maybe it was being raised to the old Burger King jingle, but those who market products to boomers say that boomers always want to “have it their way.” They have sometimes been given choice at the expense of other things they might want. (For example, they have accepted cafeteria style employee benefits that have more choice but fewer employer contributions than the traditional fixed packages).
It is likely that boomers will want to continue living in their own homes as long as possible (like their parents), but they will want more choices, and more customized services. The same will be true if they need residential care. Many of the high-end assisted living and housing with services programs are being developed now to appeal to boomers —first as the children of consumers, then as the consumers themselves.
Seeing their aging parents’ experience may be a wake-up call to many boomers, who may not have been planning to grow up, and certainly weren’t planning to grow old.
One of the ways some boomers can take responsibility for themselves in the future is long-term care insurance, which the state is working to more accessible, affordable and responsible to consumers—beginning with state employees.
