Slide 24 of 38
Notes:
What kinds of assets do people typically have? Here are rates for the US for some of the most common, by age group. The top two won’t help much in retirement.
The “under 35” group in this slide were young boomers in 1991, “35 to 44,” older boomers. Because asset acquisition is connected to life stage, for comparison, the table shows group just before the boom, which is where many of the older boomers are now. It is not clear whether boomers will acquire assets at the same rate as the pre-boomers did.
From this chart you can already see older boomers becoming homeowners, which is one of the principal assets people acquire.
North Carolina boomers are more likely to be homeowners than in US: 50.2 percent for younger, 70.2 percent for older. Home ownership data is not available by race for different age groups within the state but there is a big difference in home owning by race for the state as a whole—72.9% for whites, 49.6% for African Americans.
