Notes:
The colored pie slices show the percentage of NC boomers in various occupational categories. The lighter shaded section of the slice shows the percentage who might have pensions if they do as well as people retiring nationally in 1993 in those occupations. For example, about 11% of NC boomers in the private sector work in Sales; about 24% of these boomer workers can expect a pension in retirement.
This is perhaps a “best case” scenario, because pension programs are becoming less common across the country and because NC has historically had fewer pension benefits within comparable jobs.
Lots of boomers are potentially without pensions. More than half of the professional and almost half of the executive retired with them in 1993, but 81.4 percent in service occupations didn’t have them, and this occupational category is one of the state’s leading areas of growth.
Two important categories are not here. Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing accounts for 2.2 percent of boomer workers, who are likely not to have pensions. About 14 percent of NC employees of all ages work for the local, state, or federal government; if the rate is the same for boomers, they may have pensions from that source.
